Nana goes back in for surgery today. AGAIN. After her accident, the tissue in one of her legs was so damaged that it swelled up with fluid. Originally the doctors were hoping that it would drain on its own but as time went on, they saw that this was not happening. So when she went into surgery earlier this week to repair her pelvis, they drained the fluid from her leg and left some "taps" in there where it could continue to drain.
This was very painful for mom, she has had a very yucky few days. Yesterday the doctors expressed concern about dead tissue under the skin where the fluid sat for so long. So today they are going in again to do a "possible debridement of tissue" in her leg and make sure everything is okay in the skin area.
The recovery from each surgery puts her back several days since she has to recover from surgery and then regain her strength again before restarting physical or occupational therapy. So each of these is a setback to the short term goal of getting home. But we want her to be as good as new so we are still thankful that she can have such good medical care, even if it is painful and frustrating!
The external rod placed above mom's pelvis on Wednesday will be there for about 14 weeks. According to mom it looks like half of a steering wheel has been bolted into her lower pelvis.
But here is some good news!!! Mom did a radiology something or other this week where they injected dye into her bladder to see if it was still leaking - and it wasn't!!! Her bladder has healed. Hooray. So when she is strong enough to use the bathroom she won't need to have a catheter anymore.
