Speaking Chinese

When I was in graduate school, one of my Chinese buddies tried to teach me the difference between "Lu" and "Liu."  He tried to teach me for 2 years - I taught him how to drive a car in 2 weeks, and in 2 years I never managed to hear or speak the difference between "Lu" and "Liu."

That's a little what it is like in our house these days with a beginning speaker.  For example,

Ba (pronounced "ba! ba! ba!" when excited) means ball.
Ba Ba is the name of Nory's stuffed sheep.
Ba Ba refers to any drinking vessel: bottle, sippy cup, mug, or dog bowl.
Baaaaa! is how Nory pronounces "burr" which she says when stepping outside the house or car on a cold day.

And yes, "ba ba ba ba" could mean the sheep's water.

Confused yet?  Me too.
