Summer Solstice, Santa Barbara Style

Today was the summer solstice parade in Santa Barbara. My parents are up for the weekend so the 5 of us, plus Finny, walked down to watch the parade. There were lots of people but it wasn't actually as crowded as I'd expected - we managed to find a good place to sit and watch.

I think I was expecting something similar to the Fremont Solstice Parade. Santa Barbara's wasn't quite as interesting, which is to say that there weren't any naked painted people. But lots of home-made, human powered floats and costumes still made for an excellent afternoon!

We mostly went in order to see Julie, Dan's cousin, who was performing capoeira in the parade

I'm not exactly sure what this was, but the guy in his speedo got lots of cheers from the crowd!

A yellow submarine

There were lots of scantily clad sorority belly dancer types

But my favorite floats featured kids

And here is a scooter powered starfish!

To be honest, I don't think there was much quality control for this parade, it sure seemed to have an anything goes mentality! But it was fun all the same. And guess what caboose of the parade was? In true Santa Barbara ridiculousness, the last float of the parade was two street sweepers, zipping along cleaning up any signs that a parade had passed by 10 seconds earlier. I have no idea why they felt that the parade "mess" (mostly confetti and candy wrappers) had to be cleaned up so quickly, but that's Santa Barbara for you!

Check out more photos from the parade here.

I skipped the Fremont parade for obvious reasons. It looks like you had a good time at yours though.
