Car Insurance
We recently (finally) sold our second car. Bye-bye saabie! Because of losing our "multiple car discount" and other various unknown mathematical factors, the insurance on our other car, the Subaru, went up by over $100. We've been with State Farm ever since I've met Dan, but it definitely seems worth shopping around at this point. Any love or hate relationships with car insurance out there that you'd like to share? Any advice on who to try next?
Books
I didn't read most of the time I was pregnant, partly because I couldn't sit comfortably and also because I was super busy with work. These days, however, I'm devouring books. Since Nory was born, I've read and recommend the following:
Harry Potter 1
Harry Potter 2
Three Cups of Tea
The World to Come
A Girl Named Zippy
Water For Elephants
I have a couple more books in reserve, but then I'm due for a trip to the library. Any recommendations?

This isn't really a recommendation (I don't really have enough experience with my insurance for that); think of it more as information from a local. We have Esurance as our car insurance. I found them to be by far the cheapest in Santa Barbara. I had never heard of them before, but they are actually in quite a few states. All I have had to use them for was a windshield replacement (which wasn't any trouble), so I can't say how they are in a real accident situation. Also, I recently dealt with Geico as the insurance of the girl who ran into our wagon. I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were to me. Their estimate of the damages was higher than two of the three estimates I received (my third estimate was WAY higher than all of them), and they sent me a check within a couple of days.
You might like Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, especially if you liked Three Cups of Tea.
Judy, we have pemco. I don't know if they're in california. We had USAA in chicago. We've had good luck with both of them with claims, etc over the years.
You asked for book recommendations: I've recently read and enjoyed: In the Time of the Butterflies, Murakami - both the wind up bird chronicles and oh, I can't remember, it's big. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay - best book in a long while!!! Jumpha Lahiri - short stories, amazing new book just out in paperback. Interpreter of Maladies, is her old book and was wonderful as well. For fun kid book - Haroun and the Sea of Stories - it's actually an adult book, but a kids book as well, if I didn't recommend this to you years ago.
Cameron says he recommends William Gibson for post-apocalyptic sci-fi with a noire twist. He and I also just read "How to Be GOod" pretty amussing, easy read, with a bit of an "American Beauty" type feel by the end, in my opinion.
Try out USAA, they used to only serve military families, but just opened up to others. They have hands down the best customer service I have ever experienced and have very competitive prices. 1800-531-2600..i think that's the number.
Dan and Jen book recommendation - Two Caravans by Marina Lewycka. Found it by accident in a hostel book exchange pile. It's a funny one. As for car insurance we recommend selling the subaru and getting a moped with twin sidecars for Nory and Danny!
