I'm not sure anyone from the official Santa Barbara chamber of tourism would admit to this, but apparently, Santa Barbara loves landfills. Oh, they have recycling, and yard waste bins, and cute little pictures on the street drains of dolphins reminding you not to dump toxins... but what I just found out is that Santa Barbara does NOT HAVE DIAPER SERVICE!!! I mean, not having a Target is one thing, but not having a diaper service? For heaven's sake, my parents used a diaper service in the 70's! Isn't California supposed to be progressive?
I heard this first hand from my granola-hippy-prenatal yoga instructor, Fredda, so I'm pretty sure it is accurate (she had just spent 20 minutes of our class time harping on formula). Everyone in the class - about 20 pregnant or new moms - moaned about how unfortunate it was. I just can't bear the thought of using disposable diapers! But I also can't bear the thought of purchasing and washing all of our own diapers... I guess I'll have to wait and see which urge is stronger: the urge to keep disposable diapers out of a landfill and their toxins and diaper rash off of my baby, or the urge to not have to buy all those diapers and do all that laundry.

Ohhh Judy!!! My sister uses cloth diapers... Lately she has been using modern day aka toxic diapers :), but she tries hard to just use the cloth ones. My niece did not have 1 single diaper rash with those diapers. I will ask her for the info on them and send it to you! I personally want to use cloth ones, just seems more natural. Miss you and your baby bump.

Same problem here. The last diaper service in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex closed a few years back. I have registered for cloth diapers, for the very reason of not wanting to be responsible for a very little person creating a very large amount of trash. However, I need to be realistic about our lifestyle. My job requires weekends, and at times, whole weeks. So, Mission Trip week, for example, will be a disposable week. There's no way I will be toting a week's worth of dirty cloth diapers around all week, and then home to be washed.
When we're home however, we will be using cloth, and as much as possible outside of home...and will feel good about however much we can do to reduce the waste going into the landfills. :) Let me know what your solution(s) turn out to be though, because I keep looking each month for any new diaper options....
We used disposable (I know) with Elise, but are using cloth for Emilie. So much better! She has not had one single diaper rash. (Elise had them all the time.) And the wash really isn't bad. Really. You clean up after Finny, yes? This is way better than that. And it's so much less expensive than disposables, and you don't have to feel guilty about landfills. Email me (or Andy) if you want the nitty gritty details. AND...I have a really good friend who owns a natural parenting store, and they're online as well. She walked me through the details of cloth (because the options seem endless!), and I know she would love to talk to you if you're looking for advice.
Is it too late to genetically engineer your baby to not poop or pee?
Paul - yes, I think it is too late.
Calia - Sigh, I suspect will end up with a similar plan.
Liza and Holly - great! I'd love to hear what kind/how many/etc etc etc.
I believe your yoga instructor is correct. A guy I work with does the wash-your-own kind, so I can always get some advice from him if you want anymore. I am guessing that the people around here have their own live-in diaper services (aka nannies, housekeepers, etc.).
hello judy! i followed this blog on the bbc - here's the article on 'reuseable nappies'~ enjoy & best of luck to ya ;D

Hey--news! I just found one in our area. Not really, it's a ways away, a different county, BUT Dallas County was on their delivery list...I'm not sure if we'll use them or not, but I found it hopeful that there was at least one option...I hadn't been looking in a big enough area. Would that be a possibility for you? Would a neighboring region maybe deliver as far as you guys?
Nope. The closest communities, SLO, Ventura/Oxnard, and Santa Maria also do not have diaper service. The closest I found was Pasadena, about 100 miles away, and they don't service SB. Which means all the rich Santa Barbara residents are either using disposables, washing their own diapers (hard to imagine), or more likely, just telling their maid or nanny to wash the diapers.

I haven't used these yet, but I'm going to order some with Emilie's next set of diapers. I think they're going to make me very happy..I'll let you know.
Another diaper option...
